The History of Native Hawaii AhVahleen Plus Hawaiian Skin Care and Health Treatment
Aloha Aikane,
My friends call me AhVah. I would like to share with you the History of The AhVahleen Hawaiian Skin Care and Health Treatment. For as long as I can remember, my skin has always been sensitive to the sunrays. Whenever I spent more than an hour in the sun I would breakout in what I referred to then as skin blisters. The skin area in the center of my forehead and my cheeks would become reddish. And then tiny water blisters would occur. It would eventually become dry, scaly and itchy. Whenever I would scratch, my flaky dead skin cells would fall like dandruff.
All of my life I played outdoors sports; therefore, this skin problem has always been with me. All through my youth and adult years, whatever my family doctor would give me (which usually was a salve, like calamine lotion) I applied to my skin. Every remedy I tried seemed temporary, as my skin problem would keep reoccurring. It did not bother me emotionally, and so I never had it analyzed by a specialist, like a dermatologist. So I never really gave much thought to finding any kind of specific cure for my skin problem. I simply accepted it as part of a cycle in my life. Perhaps it’s a male thing to not care.
At 30, married and still playing sports in the sun, I also produced and entertained in the Royal Hawaiian Luau Show at the famous Royal Hawaiian Hotel. I was the master of ceremony and got to introduce all the stars from 1970 to 1987. Whenever my skin problem would occur, I would simply use my wife’s Jergens Lotion and cover up the problem. I really do not know, to this day, if anyone noticed this cover makeup I wore on stage.
In 1987, unexpectedly finding myself a widower, there were many changes in my life. However, my skin problem remained with me. I don’t know why, but at that time, I got tired of covering up my skin problem and decided to do something about it. After nearly a year of various remedies, I thought I would try something natural. What? I did not really know. This you might say was the start of AhVahleen.
My Pretty (my favorite name for my grandma) lived on the hillside of Kalawahine Place, in the Makiki heights of Honolulu. Many natural Hawaiian herbs flourished on these hillsides. As a youngster growing up in the 1940s, my Pretty would give me daily Hawaiian herbs as a preventative medicine treatment. I don’t remember ever being sick with the common cold or flu. One of the things that I recall was that I never saw my Pretty washing her face with soap and water. She had a small stone, in the shape of a Hawaiian poi pounder, which she used to grind various herbs in a porcelain cup. She used this ground-up mixture to wash her facial skin, and then rinsed with cold water. I also remember her being a strikingly attractive woman who many said appeared much younger than her actual age. With this in mind, in 1988, I thought why not find out what my Pretty used to wash her facial skin with.
She had long passed away, so I asked mom about it. Mom couldn’t recall what she used. I then asked several relatives. None could recall anything about Pretty’s skin care remedies, but they all knew she had one. However, some of these relatives gave me their own family recipes for skin care, and so I wrote them down. Living with my Pretty during my childhood, I often went with her to pick some of these herbs that grew on the mountainside. However, I only recall that she used aloe as one of the main ingredients.
With the various family recipes for skin care, I began researching what they were, and whether or not it would help me with my skin problem. I had pages of information about home remedies for skin care. So, I went to the University of Hawaii Library, the Bishop Museum and especially the Hawaiian section on plants and herbs at the main public library in downtown Honolulu. I found out that many of these herbs contained similar ingredients, and so by a process of deduction, I began keeping one ingredient and eliminating all others containing similar contents. Eventually, I was left with a basic amount of stuff from which I processed the AhVahleen formula.
The initial mixture I made had a terrible odor. However, most good medicine does, and so I gave it a try. I rubbed my facial skin with this conglomerate of herbal mixture, and washed it away with water. I did this daily for two weeks. Although it had a distinctive odor, it was not totally displeasing to me. At the end of two weeks, I noticed that my flaky scaly dry skin was no more, and my skin felt smooth. I kept using it because I felt it made my skin feel nice. Also, to my pleasant surprise, I could stay for hours in the sun and never had to be concerned about any after effects. I really felt good.
After several months, I never gave what I had developed much concern or thought that it was anything more than something that had gotten rid of my skin problem. I kept this raw mixture in a medium size jar in the refrigerator. After several months, my daughter noticed the difference in my facial skin and began using the mixture for her own use without me knowing about it. She loved what it did for her skin. My daughter LeAna was a performer with a Polynesian show at the Ala Moana Hotel.
Well, one day she came to me and said that her hula sisters in the cast wanted to try this mixture. LeAna said that her hula sisters complimented her on how natural her makeup looked, and especially asked her about the natural looking foundation that she used. She told them that since she had been using her dad’s skin lotion, that she never bothered anymore about using a foundation on her skin before putting on any makeup. They wanted to try it. I was left speechless, because I didn’t know that my daughter was specifically doing all this. All I knew was that one-day my daughter had complimented me about my skin and asked if she could try the mixture.
But now, others were involved, and I cautioned my daughter about others taking a chance on my unknown formula. I was even more surprised when my daughter revealed to me that many of them had already tried it and loved it, and gave her some money to pay for the ingredients that I would need to make the stuff for them. Well, that’s what it was at that time…”stuff”. Because, it had no name, and had no other purpose than what it had done for me…it cured my skin problem.
After much insistence and pleas by my daughter on their behalf, I decided to look into this “stuff” for the hula girls. I researched this “stuff” as thoroughly as I felt necessary with the assistance of some professionals. Eventually, a formula was developed, a product was available, and people were willing to pay money for it. So it was necessary to give it a name. My middle name is AhVah, and my wife’s middle name is Arleen. So, I named it AhVahleen.
In 1989, I wrote to various cosmetic companies to see if any of them would be interested in AhVahleen. Most responded saying that they already had their own skin care line. Two companies responded positively. After a time, I decided not to sell my formula or give up AhVahleen in any way. However, I did gain great credibility for AhVahleen. I figured that if any of these large conglomerates would show any interest in my product, then my product has something unique and that perhaps I should consider pursuing its possibilities. AhVahleen is an original Hawaiian Skin Care.
In the ensuing years, to about 1994, although many were already paying to use it, there were still much to be learned about AhVahleen. I found out that AhVahleen was a five-in-one product. It had the properties to (1) Clean (2) Moisturize (3) Vitalize (4) contained all the natural Nutrients that skin cells require and (5) Heals (according to the users). Also, users reported that by using AhVahleen first, it made their other skin products work better…so I added the word Plus to its name. I felt I had a significantly unique product that seemed marketable. I had AhVahleen registered with the FDA as an all-natural product, without any harmful toxins.
Now it really is a great and wonderful privilege to present AhVahleen as:
